A generation ago many men probably didn’t know they had a prostate gland. Now most of us are aware that this little gland is potential TROUBLE.
The prostate sits below the bladder and wraps around the urethra (the out pipe for urine). Its main function is to manufacture semen.
There are four main health issues with the prostate.
Prostate Enlargement In around 50% of men over 50 the prostate swells, a condition known as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). This interferes with the flow of urine and may cause weak urine flow, urinary frequency, feeling of bladder fullness and similar symptoms.
Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is extremely common in older men (50% of men over 70). In many cases it is very slow growing and symptom free, but for around 7% it spreads with potentially fatal consequences.
Acute Bacterial Prostatitis This is inflammation of the prostate due to infection. It is relatively rare.
Chronic Nonbacterial Prostatitis The main symptoms of this condition are pelvic, perineal or genital pain. It is often misdiagnosed as bacterial in origin and wrongly treated with antibiotics. There is growing evidence that it may be the result of chronic tension in the pelvic floor muscles and in fact have little to do with the prostate itself.
In conventional medical thinking, excess levels of the male hormone Testosterone (T) are often blamed for stimulating the excess growth of tissue in both BPH and prostate cancer. Drugs which block T’s action or stop the body producing T are often used with mixed success. Removal of the prostate is another common treatment. Both the drugs and the surgery have unpleasant and potentially serious side effects.
There is in fact a strong body of evidence that excess T has nothing to do with these prostate problems. Not least is the fact that BPH and prostate cancer develop at an age when a man’s T levels are typically low and falling!
A much more likely factor is excess levels in a man’s body of the female hormone Estrogen (E). There is a tendency for T to convert to E in middle aged and older men and levels of E and E-like pollutants in the environment are increasing dramatically. It is factors like this that may be behind the alarming increase in the incidence of prostate problems in recent years. It may also be true that healthy T levels actually have a protective effect on the prostate.
Prostate enlargement responds extraordinarily well to appropriate treatment with herbs and supplements. Research shows that the type of herbs included in Natural Virility Clinic programmes consistently perform as well as or better than commonly prescribed medical drugs but without side effects.
With prostate cancer preventive measures may include: a diet high in fresh fruit and vegetables and low in animal products, particularly dairy; regular exercise; herbs and supplements to maintain a healthy balance between T and E.
Even if you already have a diagnosis of cancer, making such changes could help to slow the cancer’s growth and balance the side effects of conventional treatment. A Natural Virility Clinic programme offers a structured way to change.
Chronic Nonbacterial Prostatitis is another condition that responds remarkably well to natural treatments including pelvic massage, deep relaxation training and specific exercises.
Jack’s Story
Jack was 58 when he came to see me. For a year or so he’d been getting awkward urinary symptoms: urgency, frequency and a weak stream. He was also noticing some blood in his urine. His doctor had diagnosed benign prostatic hypertrophy. Recently the urgency had become so bad it was bordering on incontinence.
I explained that these symptoms can arise either when the enlarged prostate creates a pressure on the bladder, or when the genital muscles atrophy due to low hormone levels.
I prescribed for Jack a herbal formula containing several herbs known to improve BPH together with adaptogenic herbs which would help to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. I also gave him two supplements: Zinc which is essential to prostate health, and another which combined several plant derived chemicals which effectively reduce excess estrogen.
It took two months for Jack to see real changes and a further four months to consolidate the improvement.
Jack, now symptom free, continues to take low doses of herbs and supplements on a maintenance basis.
