The Natural Virility Clinic Erectile Dysfunction and Low Libido

Rekindle desire and return to full sexual vigour

If you experience difficulty getting or sustaining erections, or your sex drive is simply rock bottom, I don’t need to describe to you the frustration, the anguish, the heartache, the assault on your pride and esteem that this causes.  You’ve been there, you know it too well.

You might have simply suffered in silence, or perhaps braved your GP.  Maybe tried a prescription for Viagra or similar.  It works some of the time for some men, but carries its own risk and only deals with one aspect of the complex physiology of erection.  Viagra will not make a difference if your libido is absent.

You might take some comfort in the fact that you are not alone.  In fact about one third of all men are in the same boat to a greater or lesser extent.  But what you really need to know is that there are safe, natural and effective approaches to help you once again enjoy strong and lasting erections and take pleasure in satisfying sex.

That answer lies in looking at the wider hormonal, metabolic, lifestyle and emotional context of men’s sexual physiology.  In fact we must address three distinct areas:

Proper hormonal balance

Circulatory and vascular efficiency

Positive neurological and psychological balance.

When you come for a consultation at the Natural Virility Clinic I will focus on this wider picture and work with you to develop a personal programme which may include lifestyle changes, proven herbs and supplements, exercises and other techniques.

Typical issues we may explore include:

1. Common diseases

Erectile dysfunction may be an early symptom of a number of diseases. These include heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and depression.  Some of these diseases are potential killers so if you are in the high risk (middle-aged, over weight, under exercised) category, it may be important to see your doctor alongside our programme.  The good news is that there is evidence that appropriate changes in lifestyle and diet can stop or even reverse these serious diseases.

2. Medical Treatment

Both ED and LL may be the direct result of medical treatment.  Hundreds of prescription drugs list ED or LL as side effects.  These include:

All most all anti depressives

Cholesterol lowering drugs like statins (some of the worst offenders)

Blood pressure drugs

Some digestive drugs

Some antihistamines

Sedatives

If  you are on this kind of medication, we can explore natural, side effect free alternatives.  So with your healthcare provider’s support we may be able to reduce or eliminate your dependence on medication.

3. Stress and Fatigue

While our body and mind responds well to challenge, prolonged and unremitting stress drains our system creating hormonal havoc and wrecking our sexual responses.  If we get locked into an adrenalin fuelled “fight or flight” reaction the body prioritises immediate survival, and sexual response goes to the bottom of the list.

Natural plant medicines known as “adaptogens” are proven to help develop stamina and help the body cope better with stress.  Many adaptogens also stimulate male sex hormone production.  These herbs are therefore key players in your programme to overcome stress-related ED and LL.  We can also explore strategies and techniques to help you meet life’s challenges without triggering unwanted stress responses.

4. Aged Related Hormonal Decline

From the age of about 30 men’s sex hormone levels gradually decline.  By the time we are pushing 50, they may be very low indeed.  This is “male menopause” or andropause and is a major cause of ED and LL.  Please see the page on this subject to learn about the many wonderful natural ways to reverse this decline. Go to Andropause page.

5. Lifestyle Related Hormonal Decline

There are many lifestyle related factors which can turn off the production of sex hormones.  Over exercising, under exercising, poor diet, smoking, high alcohol consumption and exposure to toxic chemicals may all need to be addressed as part of a programme to resolve ED and LL.

6. Psychological and Emotional Factors

I’ve left this to last, because I believe that this aspect of ED and LL is often overemphasized in a way that is unhelpful.  I believe that in many cases emotional disturbance is the result of ED/LL rather than the cause.

Occasionally there may be a long term history including trauma, repression and general emotional dysfunction.  Such cases are usually obvious and may benefit from psychotherapy.

More often emotional issues are more immediate: A marriage in which romance has faded so sex becomes boring and routine; Difficulties in other aspects of a relationship; Guilt or jealousy if one partner has been unfaithful.

However most often a man will be feeling bad about himself because of the problems he is experiencing sexually rather than the other way round.

Where emotional disturbance is an issue I draw on the rapid and effective self help strategies and techniques of cognitive psychologies such as NLP or Psychocybernetics to provide you with tools to stop the negative thought patterns which interfere with sexual feelings.

John’s story

I’d been treating John’s wife for a gynaecological issue for a while when she mentioned that things were not well with John, particularly in the bedroom department.

John eventually came to me on the pretext of a skin rash, but in the consultation he soon opened up as to the real issues: A typical pattern of low libido coupled with erectile dysfunction.

Key points that emerged were:

John worked shifts in a warehouse; the work was pressurized and heavy.  John was therefore tired, stressed with disrupted sleep patterns.

It was a dead end job and he’d failed repeatedly to find better.  His self esteem was at a low ebb, bordering on depression

.

He was in hard training to run a half marathon.  His attempt to get fit and active was commendable but this kind of endurance training drains testosterone and floods the body with stress hormones.

Despite his fitness campaign he was drinking heavily.  High alcohol consumption is disastrous to men’s hormonal health.

He ate junk food at work: crisps, chocolate bars etc. Similar to alcohol. This kind of high carbohydrate junk food is harmful to male hormone levels.

We couldn’t do anything about John’s immediate work situation, but some coaching on stress management and self esteem helped to boost his energy levels and self image.  He did in fact get the job of his dreams some months later.

We changed his exercise routine, to short sessions of high intensity cardio and heavy weight lifting.  This kind of exercise can actually raise testosterone levels.  John was delighted to find this routine gave all the stamina he needed to run his half marathon.

Then, with a few other changes to lifestyle and diet, we added a herbal formula combining adaptogens with powerful testosterone building herbs.

Within a few weeks John was fine.  I still treat his wife and now, six years on, I know that everything remains good.
